I feel there is legitimate alarm for tanking for tanking's sake. For goodness sake, we still have the Expos home from the Playoffs since 1981 and they've been home since 2005. And, 600 Losses would not be an overnight proposition. It would be shabby management and ownership, the card games getting out of control, and disgruntled players, fans and sponsors.
The most activitity would be at the Trade Deadline. It would be miserable if it was 1 Fire Sale, but annual Fire Sales for equal parts Major and Minor League Talent would be insufferable and cold, even for those whose Hope Sprung Eternal.
And, it would mean winning the Top Pick on an Annual Basis, and every year, you'd draft players against who'd you have on the Program. And, had the Mariners insisted on Southern California Prospects like they did in 1987, it would have been asking for trouble later on.
And, it would wither a long suffering fan bases at the vines. With no fruit, a Major League Roster resembling the Pecos League and cussing tempertantrums in front of a National Television audience, it would be even more debilitating to make a budget to begin with.
It wouldn't be the times close to .500 or the times close to the postseason, an actual sniff of energy in the Fall would have been a rumor.
